LiDAR has been recognized as a pivotal technology required in sensor fusion architectures with vision and radar to greatly increase the accuracy of object and free-space recognition for autonomous driving vehicles. However, most existing LiDAR systems are too expensive, require rapidly spinning mirrors or other similar moving parts such as MEMs, physically large, which may not pass automotive qualification standards. TriLumina has developed advanced illumination for LiDAR that combines VCSEL arrays, electronic beam steering, and micro-optics into a low cost, reliable chip. All solid state LiDAR architectures based on TriLumina technology enables improved reliability, cost and size as compared to MEMs for many applications. A comparison of TriLumina’s all-solid state approach to MEMS based architectures will be discussed. TriLumina VCSEL technology has been demonstrated to meet Grade-1 automotive temperature ranges and is shipping products now.
