Connected devices and mobile platforms like wearables offer new possibilities for monitoring environmental parameters like air pollutants such as NO2 or volatile organic compounds. These applications pose high requirements on gas sensing technologies such as long-term stability, a digital interface integrated into a small package and ideally the ability to measure multiple gases. These requirements are not fulfilled by traditional gas sensor solutions. In particular, metal-oxide based gas sensors suffer from poor long-term stability when they are operated in atmospheres containing even very low concentrations of siloxanes which are ubiquitous in real-life applications. This problem is particularly pronounced in mobile applications where the sensor is constantly exposed to high siloxane concentrations. Sensirion’s multi-pixel gas sensing platform combines three key innovations that are crucial for the widespread integration of metal-oxide based gas sensors in appliance, mobile and IoT applications: long-term stability through siloxane resistance, a complete gas measurement system integrated into a small package and the integration of several sensing elements on one chip.
